He Wants to Put Up the Christmas Decorations Now, Just After Halloween, but His Wife Says They Need to Wait Until After Thanksgiving—Readers Voted: When Should Christmas Decorations Go Up?

This husband says he was putting Christmas lights up just after Halloween while his wife was out for the day. When his wife came home, it sparked a disagreement between the couple, with the wife pointing out that their pumpkins were still outside.

According to the husband, who shared his story with readers online, she wants each holiday celebrated separately and considers outdoor decorations different to those inside because "the whole street" sees them. But the husband says he enjoys coming home to the lights during dark evenings and refuses to leave them switched off until she agrees it is time.

Neither has budged on their stance on this issue, leaving the husband stumped. He shared the situation with an online community to appeal to readers and settle, once and for all, whether Christmas decorations should go up immediately after Halloween or wait until Thanksgiving is over.

15+ Teachers Share Why Gen Alpha is Struggling With Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic

When I was a kid, America was all about not leaving kids behind in this setting (when I was a kid, I thought that policy was about parents not leaving their kids behind at the grocery store), but now that it's been 20 years since that initiative, it seems like it might have been a mistake. I understand why teachers and parents don't want a 16-year-old still in a 5th-grade classroom, even if that's where he belongs educationally. But many kids have been promoted when they shouldn't have been, and it has hurt them in the long run.

Schools have a major incentive to pass students, even when they don't deserve to move on to the next grade. They don't want their school's graduation rate to be low. If only 60% of high school seniors graduate, the school looks bad and gets less state funding. Long gone are the days of the 19-year-old high school sophomores. If a kid doesn't complete the work required in 10th grade, he's passed along to 11th grade, just like his peers who did the work.

When kids face no consequences for not doing their work, teachers have very little they can do to motivate them to come to class and complete it. Some kids are genuinely motivated and want good grades to get into college, but they're not the ones who make teachers' lives miserable. Kids who don't care whether they pass or fail need external motivation to get their work done if they're not getting it from their parents. If a kid actually thinks he'll be held back and unable to graduate with his friends, he might become more inclined to do C-grade work instead of F-grade work.

I feel bad for teachers who are thrust into this system without any real way to fix it. They can't hold their students to a high standard because they get in trouble for giving the grades their students deserve. They are forced to hold their students' hands through everything, even if a student will be going to college in a couple of years. When a professor has 300 students in their lecture, they can't give every kid unique special treatment.

Gen Alpha is not just behind because they are getting passed from grade to grade without any regard for whether they're prepared. They are behind because of a whole host of reasons. The teachers in this story each have their own explanations for why Gen Alpha is like that, and I am convinced they know this generation better than anyone.

This employee figured it out.

It can be frustrating when somebody else swoops in and takes credit for something that you did. Maybe this happened to you on a small level in a conversation in a group. Maybe you had a funny quip or joke, and you said it, but you said it kind of quietly. Maybe only a couple of people heard. And then somebody else swooped in and says the same thing just in a loud voice, and it crushes. This happens all the time, and is a classic way that we experience getting our work taken credit for by somebody else. It can be an incredibly frustrating experience, but an incredibly common one. It's even more frustrating, though, when this happens at work. You work hard to do the things that you do, and you don't want to see somebody else take credit for everything that you do.
Experienced employee told by boss to "just delegate" their work to an unqualified junior staffer, which has left them feeling vulnerable and like their boss wants to replace them: 'Meanwhile, the boss keeps talking about "improving AI adoption"'

An experienced developer who has worked at the same company for about five years finds themself being told to "just delegate" their work to a junior staff member who is unqualified to take on the work. Meanwhile, their coworkers are shipping AI-generated work without checking it first.

When should you delegate tasks and when should you do it yourself?

With AI promising magical productivity that, in a lot of cases, has yet to materialize, we often forget the original advice that every upper manager gave to middle managers and experienced senior staff everywhere when they complained about too high a workload: "Just delegate more."

To them, it has always been a legitimate strategy. After all, they're doing it daily when they delegate all their work to you!

Go figure.

I think a lot of us have probably had a manager at some point in the past, present, or definitely will at some point in the future who has been guilty of smashing the "delegate" button far too quickly. It's the advice they give for any problem, the miracle solution.

The problem is, you're keenly aware that your direct reports already have too much to handle. They're drowning in their workload already and struggling to keep up. They're also not necessarily qualified to handle your work that might be delegated to them. There's a reason why it was a higher-level task to begin with. But, having less expensive junior staff handling tasks out of their pay grade has long been a favored management solution, especially when it can be labeled as "development" or "growth." Which brings us full circle back to that original problem: You don't have enough time to complete your work because of the work your manager is delegating to you.

Where did the cycle start? That's anyone's guess; it's one of life's greatest unanswered questions.
